Week Four

Since our previous blog, we have moved from Belize City to the capital city of Belmopan. After the hustle and bustle of Belize City, we have enjoyed settling into the more calm, residential atmosphere of Belmopan, and have loved the opportunity to explore a new part of Belize. Belmopan, often referred to as the “Garden City”, is filled with parks, blossoming trees and walking/biking paths. This has ensured that our walks to school are never dull and there is always […]

Week Four

Hello friends and family!  Our fourth week of teaching has come to an end! This week we started out fresh in Belize City. We have switched from teaching in high schools and are now in primary schools teaching students from standard 3 to standard 6. Teaching pairs were excited to visit our new schools to meet the principals and set up schedules for the next 3 weeks.   Cassie and Jessee have started teaching in two schools; Salvation Army Primary School […]

Week 3

This week was a very successful third and final week in Belize city. It was a bitter sweet ending saying goodbye to the students whom we connected with and learnt so much from. We feel encouraged knowing we left the students with health skills and knowledge to pass on to their communities. Gabe and Abby taught lessons on STI’s, HIV, and condom use, and finished up the week with a final lesson providing exam study strategies and tips for coping […]

Week 3, Sun, Smiles and goodbyes

Hello family and friends!  Our third week has arrived already, we can’t believe how fast time has gone. We began Monday with preparing for our break activity for first and second form students; Monday’s activity was goal setting! The students decided on a S.M.A.R.T goal and wrote out ways to achieve it. It was awesome to see there goals, dreams, and aspirations including finishing high school, becoming a pilot, and buying a car to name a few. We spent the […]

Week 2

We had another great week of teaching this week.  We had a full day of successful classes on Monday, and finished the day off by rewarding ourselves with a tropical fruit feast.  On Tuesday, we were invited to the devotion ceremony for the fourth form (grade 12s).  This was one of their last ceremonies before graduating, so it had a very positive energy with lots of cheering and music.  We did one of our classic tabatta workouts in the park near our hotel after […]

Week Two

It’s hard to believe that another week has gone by here in Belize City! Between our days spent teaching, lesson-planning and a jam-packed weekend to culminate week two of initiative, the six of us have sure been kept busy!                 As last week, the six of us are up-and-going early in the morning on weekdays; after a quick coffee and bowl of Cheerios for breakfast we set-off on foot for the impossibly humid (but enjoyable) walks to school. At Gateway […]

Week One

Just like all of QHO’s peer educators on international initiatives, I am sure, the Belize group is beyond excited to have touched-down abroad after months of hard work and preparation with QHO. Our journey began in October when Gabe, Abby, Tyra, Holly, Kara and Katelyn were all hired to make-up six of the ten peer educators in the Belize group. We have spent the past academic year at Queen’s fundraising, bonding both within and outside QHO-related events, and prepping through […]

First Week

This was our first week in Belize! On Sunday, April 28th we headed to Pearson Toronto Airport bright and early to catch our first flight! We had a little mishap and thought our PE Jessee lost her phone while boarding the plane, but it was just in the crack of the seat – phew! It was smooth travelling afterwards through our layover at Houston Airport, and then to our final destination in Belize City! There we were met by Domingo […]

One last time…

On Friday, we completed Week 6 which also signals the end of initiative! This week, both teaching pairs taught their final lessons and said extremely difficult goodbyes to all of their students. On Thursday afternoon, they made their way to Belize City to meet up with the secondary team ahead of the meeting on Friday with district managers from the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Education. At the meeting we discussed the schools, the lessons we taught and future plans […]

An un-BELIZE-able 6 weeks

Take a look at our final week on initiative…. This week at Maud Williams High School, Peter and Nicole focussed on gang violence and substance abuse. Gang violence is a fairly large issue in Belize and both the counsellor and students at Maud Williams HS had expressed an interest in learning more about this topic. We worked on decision making and encouraged students to consider the potential outcomes of dangerous activities and empower them to make smart choices. To end […]
