One last time…

On Friday, we completed Week 6 which also signals the end of initiative! This week, both teaching pairs taught their final lessons and said extremely difficult goodbyes to all of their students. On Thursday afternoon, they made their way to Belize City to meet up with the secondary team ahead of the meeting on Friday with district managers from the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Education. At the meeting we discussed the schools, the lessons we taught and future plans […]

An un-BELIZE-able 6 weeks

Take a look at our final week on initiative…. This week at Maud Williams High School, Peter and Nicole focussed on gang violence and substance abuse. Gang violence is a fairly large issue in Belize and both the counsellor and students at Maud Williams HS had expressed an interest in learning more about this topic. We worked on decision making and encouraged students to consider the potential outcomes of dangerous activities and empower them to make smart choices. To end […]

Cancer walks and leadership talks

The secondary crew had an eventful week in Belize City! One of the highlights was taking part in the Annual Cancer Walk! We woke up bright and early at 3 AM and hopped on a bus to Ladyville. Once we got there, there was a dance warm-up and then we started on our 12 km walk (with music blasting the entire time and chocolate milk ideals to keep us hydrated). The walk ended in Belize City with music, food and […]

Life’s what you make it so let’s make it hot

And just like that week 5 has come and gone in San Ignacio. We can’t believe that there is only one week left of initiative!  The Primary Team has had an amazing week teaching lots of lessons and really connecting with the kids in both schools. Monday was a holiday here in Belize so the girls caught up on some much needed rest and planned out their lessons for this week.  It was another hot week here in San Ignacio, […]

Secondary takes on the big city

The secondary team had a wonderful first week in Belize City and were very busy learning our schedule, figuring out the ropes of the city, and lesson planning for the 3 schools we are teaching at, which include the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA), Sadie Vernon and Maud Williams.  All 4 of us have been teaching at the YWCA and are really enjoying our time with the girls. We had the opportunity to teach lessons on communication, sensitive issues, conflict, […]

Another Week Battling the Heat!

Our first week in San Ignacio has been absolutely amazing! After a little bit of a rough start with a mistaken hour bus ride to Belmopan, we finally made it to our new schools! Sam and Sierra are teaching at Eden, SDA Primary School located in Santa Elena which is about a half hour walk from San Ignacio. Bianca and Lindsay are teaching at Kuxlin Ha Government School which is located in Maya Mopan, Belmopan, so they take 2 buses, […]

Week 3 with secondary!

This was the secondary teams final week of teaching in Punta Gorda. We are all disappointed to be finished our time with the wonderful teachers and students at Toledo Community College and Julian Cho Technical High School. We are excited to experience Belize City and eager to meet the students at the Sadie Vernon and Maud Williams, the two secondary schools we will be teaching at for the next three weeks.  This week at Toledo Community College (TCC), Peter and […]

The Primary Team says Bye to Corozal

Today, the Primary Team left Corozal Town, Corozal to start a new half of our adventure in San Ignacio, Cayo.  Sam and Sierra finished their last week at Paraiso Government School. They taught lessons about mental illness, goal setting, and sexual responsibility. They also had the wonderful opportunity to help judge a reading contest the standard 2s and 3s were having which was super fun! Due to reading contests and spellings bees, Sam and Sierra got to spend a lot […]

Week 2 in Punta Gorda with the secondary team!

The Belize secondary team is feeling more comfortable teaching and are getting to know their students and the community better. We really appreciated the huge rainfall this week, as the weather has cooled down quite a bit. This week there was a national holiday on Monday, which gave us a chance to do some extra lesson planning and prepare for the upcoming week. It was an awesome week at Julian Cho Technical High School! Nicole and Samara had the opportunity […]

Several sunburns later…

Week 2 has come to an end for Team Primary!! It’s hard to believe that we only have one more week left in Corozal. With Lindsay, the missing puzzle piece, finally here, we feel like a completed puzzle. Our P.D, Laura, left to go home on Monday and we miss her tons! This week was a shortened week, due to Labour Day on Monday. Lindsay and Bianca taught drugs and substance abuse, hygiene and mental illness, all of which were […]
