The Belize ProgramQHO Belize is a health outreach initiative that aims to educate and inform Belizean youth about relevant health issues. Each spring, two groups of peer educators from Queen’s University conduct health education workshops in the country’s six districts. The Primary School Project teaches within elementary schools while the Secondary School Project trains high school students to become peer educators themselves.
As Belize has the highest HIV transmission rate of any country in Central America, issues of sexual health, specifically safe sex practices, are central to the Belize curriculum. Additional topics, including puberty, mental health, child abuse, substance abuse and nutrition, are also addressed on a needs basis.
