Where did all the peanut butter go?

Weh di go ann? Yup you guessed it. Belize secondary is now fluent in Creole. Honestly, we may never return to Canada (sorry moms… PS Happy Mothers Day!). In all seriousness though, the past week has been absolutely terrific. Buckle up, because this blog post is going to be a doozy! Jesse and Mario had another exciting week teaching at Toledo Community College. The week was dedicated to teaching about substance abuse and healthy sexual relationships, which stimulated interesting and […]

Chica Chica Ba-na-na ?

We can’t believe how fast two weeks have gone by. It’s starting to feel like home here in Corozal and it’s going to be so hard to say good bye. We have gotten to know a lot of the local community members and were even invited into the home of Mrs. Young, the Standard 6 teacher at Ranchito Government School. We learned so much about the culture in Belize from Mrs.Young and her daughters […]

Punta Gorda – All That and a Bag of Plaintain Chips

First group picture in Punta Gorda, Belize. ‘U n’alrite?’ As you can tell, Belize Secondary is already picking up some Creole here in Punta Gorda, Belize. It seems as though the dry season is coming to an end and the rainy season has begun. The latter half of this past week was marked by some rainstorms. Our experience in the town has been amazing so far. We have especially enjoyed the slow, laid back attitude and the energy of the […]

Chapter 2: Corozal has it all

Belize primary pre community games day! Labour day bike race      Lesson planning for our first week!   Hey friends! Good morning from the sunny shores of Corozal! Belize primary spent our first week teaching at both Ranchito Government school and San Narcisso Roman Catholic school; both schools are just outside of corozal town. We are half an hour away from the Mexican border and we are staying right on the bay (the exact opposite of secondary) The local […]

Primary is Primed and Ready!!!

Here we go folks, it’s the final countdown. Primary is very excited to make our way to Belize in a few hours and implement all the teaching strategies and skills we’ve been developing over the past 7 months. We’ve been looking forward to these next six week for so long, it’s hard to believe that they are finally here! First stop is Corozal, a coastal city in northern Belize, followed by none other than the capital itself, Belize City, and […]

The day has finally come!!!

The time has come… Exams are over, our bags are packed, and QHO Secondary is ready to leave for Belize! We can’t believe how quickly the time has passed. Over the course of our 6 week initiative, we will be teaching in three different districts of Belize including Toledo, Belize, and Stann Creek. Our team consists of four Peer Educators, including Mario Rotundo, Jesse Todd, Kathleen Hogan, James Jun and our fearless Program Director Georgia Lundy. Together, we constitute what we often refer to as […]

Primary Out!

All four members of the primary crew are in disbelief that our time teaching in Belize has come to an end. We had no idea what this experience would involve when we were chosen for the opportunity, but after 6 weeks we can all say that it has been more than incredible. Upon our arrival in April, we were nervous but excited to see what was to come in Belize. Jeff was worried about food options as Belize isn’t known […]

Secondary Signing Off… *sniff sniff*

The Secondary Crew is so sad that their 6 weeks of project has come to an end. The group had the opportunity to finish off their teaching experience at Trial Farm Primary School. It was great to experience teaching in a primary school after 5 weeks of teaching in secondary schools! It was a much different experience but a wonderful opportunity! Over the course of the week, all four Peer Educators taught Sexual Responsibility to all of the Standard 5 […]

WHAT?! ONLY ONE WEEK LEFT?!

It seems like just yesterday when we were writing our last blog post (see: 10 jars of peanut butter later…)! We cannot believe that week 5 of 6 has come to an end!  This week Meg and Evan taught at New Hope Secondary School in Orange Walk, and they have nothing but great things to say about their experience.  The pair arrived to New Hope on Tuesday morning, as Monday was a holiday, and met with Mrs. Grant the principal. […]

5 weeks later &Primary’s still kickin’

Another big hello from beautiful Belize! The Primary Team has had an exciting first week in Belize City exploring yet another district while adjusting to the different pace of the “city life”. Although there have been several nerve racking instances of crossing the busy roads, we are loving what this city has to offer (especially the local bakery with delicious bread pudding and the street-side vendors with tacos and garnaches!)   All four Peer Educators spent the week teaching […]
