Ahh we havin’ one gud gud time!

We left Belize City bright and early on Sunday morning to hop on a bright yellow school bus to begin our trek to Dangriga. We piled in with many other travellers and found ourselves squished against one another for our four hour journey. As we bounced along down the road we enjoyed some delicious Belizean donuts and bread – definitely a highlight and something that Tim Horton’s will be hard-pressed to match. We arrived in Dangriga just after noon and […]

Week 1 complete for the Primary Crew!

The Primary Team has had a memorable first week in beautiful Punta Gorda. As the students of St. Peter Claver returned to class after Easter break this past Monday, all four primary Peer Educators joined them in the classroom to discuss some relevant health topics in the community. Jenna and Jeff spent the week teaching lessons daily in three Standard 5 classes and one Standard 6 class. They covered topics of puberty, sexual responsibility, HIV/AIDS, peer influence, and ended the […]

Primary is sweating with excitement!

So we have arrived safely in Belize City, and how would we describe our first day: SWEATY! To recap, we started our journey off in Toronto, most of us donning serious jackets and long pants, cause Canadian weather is still something akin to ‘Frozen.’ So upon arrival in Miami and later Belize, we had to ‘Let It Go,’ as Idina Menzel would belt. And so there we were, shorts and tank tops on, checked in at Smoking Balam, and ready […]

Just about ready to go!

As we reach the end of the exam period, which caps off a tremendous school year at Queen’s, both QHO educators and Queen’s students alike are asking themselves the same question: WHERE HAVE THE PAST 7 MONTHS GONE!? We, the Belize secondary team have spent the past 7 months preparing for the next 6 weeks of teaching. Practice teaching on […]

It is hard to believe we just met our Project Directors (PD) and fellow Peer Educators (PE’s) for the first time in late October, and now the countdown to Belize is on! It’s been an amazing process to get ready for project. We held many fundraisers throughout the year, including selling balloons at the Santa Clause Parade, caroling, creating gifts for the […]

Primary Out

Primary Out! With tears in our eyes, we finished our last week of teaching in Belize (we didn’t actually cry because we were too dehydrated). It was an awesome end to a long and rewarding project. Our Queen’s Health Outreach journey, started back in October, has been full of continuous lesson planning, fundraising, and teaching. This experience has been life changing, and we cannot thank Belize, the HFLE coordinators, all the places we’ve stayed, and the wonderful schools for making […]

Secondary Signing Off

Our bags are packed, our teaching shirts are neatly put away and our lesson manuals have been closed for one last time. It does not seem possible that this is our last week on project and that yesterday marked our very last day teaching in Belize. Though we are sad to be leaving and full of emotions, we feel blessed that our last week of teaching was perhaps our very best! Dave and Sarah continued where they started at St. […]

Primary has One Week Left!

Only one week left! It’s unbelizeable how fast our time here has passed! 14 schools down, and 2 to go! We can’t even begin to tell all of you how much fun we’re having teaching and learning from the kids all over Belize. Here’s a recap of week 5 before we hit the final stretch. First and foremost, all those friends and families out there worried about us during our time here in beautiful Belize can stop there worrying! No […]
